Finding the right class

Which class your child should start in depends on their age and skill level.

Infants

Ages 5 months—3 years

Our classes for infants are based on age. Your child will learn floating and kicking skills, and develop their enjoyment of and confidence in the water.

You or another parent or caregiver will need to be in the water with your child during the class.

You can sign up for a class over the phone on 04 801 4403. If you already have an account with us, you can book online through our Recreation Bookings site.

Preschoolers

Ages 3—5 years

In these classes, your child will develop their swimming and water safety skills, building motor skills, self-esteem and confidence.

If your child has not yet learned to put their head underwater, they will start at the first level.

If they are comfortable putting their head underwater, they will need to come along to one of our pools for a free 5–10 minute swim assessment so we can see which level is right for them.

You can request an assessment using our online booking form, or phone us on 04 801 4403.

School-age children

Ages 5 years and up

Our classes for school-age children cater for all levels — from nervous beginners to children who can swim lengths.

Standard programme

If your child has not yet learned to put their head underwater, they will start at the first level appropriate to their age of our standard programmme for school-age children. You can book your child directly into these entrance classes — phone 04 801 4403.

If they are comfortable putting their head underwater, they will need to come along to one of our pools for a free 5–10 minute swim assessment so we can see which level is right for them.

You can request an assessment using our online booking form, or phone us on 04 801 4403.

Older beginners aged 8 to 14 years

If your child is aged between 8 and 14 years and has never swum before, we have special classes to get them off to a great start. Check out our programme for older beginners aged 8 and up. To sign up, phone 04 801 4403.

Squad

Advanced young swimmers

Squads, the top levels of our programme for school-age children, keep your child fit by improving endurance and stamina, as well as efficiency and techniques in all strokes, turns and dives. Squads also help prepare your child for club swimming and other aquatic activities.

Swimmers with special needs

If your child has special needs, an injury or a disability, you can book one-on-one lessons adapted for them. Phone your local pool for more information.

Classes for adults

If you are looking for adult classes, see: Swimming lessons for adults

Private lessons

We also offer private lessons. Phone your local pool for more information.

Moving up a level

We assess your child continuously and will let you know when they're ready to move up to the next level. This can happen at any time, not just at the end of term.

You will need to choose a day and time that suits you for the new class and book your child in.

How to get ready for class

So your child can get the most out of their lesson, make sure you arrive before the class starts.

They can have a small snack beforehand, but avoid giving them a large meal.

It's a good idea to take them to the toilet before the class.

All infants must wear a swim nappy. You can buy these at reception. For more information, see Pool rules and safety.

Stay after the lesson to enjoy our facilities

You and your child are welcome to stay after class to practise and play. For details of our four different facilities, see Pools and services.

School holiday swimming classes

We offer week-long swimming classes during the school holidays where your child has a lesson every day. These are for children who want to improve their technique or who want to stay active in the holidays. Talk to us about which class would best suit your child.

Holiday programmes are available for preschool and school-age levels. To find out how much these are, see your child’s level under Prices.

To find out when we offer these holiday classes at our different pools, check under your child’s level in Classes.
