School-age children

Ages 5 years and up

Caters for all levels - from nervous beginners to children who can swim lengths. Develops and extends your child’s swimming and water safety skills. Block courses are available in the school holidays.

Jellyfish 

This course is designed for school age children. Building confidence to put their head under the water and teaching skills to float independently. No assessment is required to enter this class.  

In this class your child will learn to:

  • float on their front and back assisted for at least 5 seconds

  • pick up an object off the bottom of the pool

  • submerge with holding breath and bubbles

  • practise a water safety skill: signal for help

Stingray

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can float for five seconds on their front and back, go underwater and pick up an object off the bottom of the pool, submerge with holding breath and bubbles and signal for help.

In this class your child will learn to: 

  • float on their front and back independently for at least 5 seconds, and get back on their feet

  • glide independently in a streamline position on front

  • glide independently on their back with arms by side

  • Assisted roll from front to back and back again

  • practise a water safety skill: correctly fit a life jacket

 

 

Kingfish

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can float on their front and back independently for at least 5 seconds, and get back on their feet, glide on their front and back independently with arms by side for 6 metres and assisted role from front to back and back again.

In this class your child will learn to: 

  • kick on their back independently for at least 8 metres

  • kick while practising freestyle arms independently for at least 8 metres

  • push and glide independently on both sides

  • kick on both sides with a board

  • practise a water safety skill: do a u-turn independently from the side of the pool and back.

Kahawai

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can kick on their back for 8 metres; kick with freestyle arms independently for 8 metres; glide independently on both sides; and kick on both sides with a board.

In this class your child will learn to:

  • kick independently on back with arm circles

  • independent freestyle with arms and kicking

  • practise a water safety skill: duct dive and move underwater

 

 

Barracudas

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can kick independently on their back for 8 metres; kick with freestyle arms independently for 8 metres; push and glide independently on both sides; and kick on both sides with a board.

In this class your child will learn to:

  • kick on both sides and roll their body to breathe independently for 8 metres

  • swim at least 8 metres freestyle arms with bilateral breathing

  • swim at least 10 metres backstroke with continuous arms

  • do a basic breaststroke kick

  • practise a water safety skill: kick and stroke on their front and roll to breathe for at least 8 metres.

Eels

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can kick independently on both sides and roll their body to breathe for 8 metres; swim 8 metres freestyle with bilateral breathing; swim 10 metres backstroke; and demonstrate basic breaststroke kick.

In this class your child will learn:

  • Unassisted bubble breathe x2

  • Dolphin kick

  • Do a reach rescue and a throw rescue with a buddy

  • Control breathing while floating on back for at least a minute

  • Duct Dive and move underwater for a slow count to five


 

Snappers

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can unassisted bubble breathe, dolphin kick, do a reach rescue and a throw rescue with a buddy, control breathing while floating on back for a least 1 minute, duct dive and move underwater for a slow count to five.

In this class your child will learn:

  • 2 x 12 metres freestyle with bilateral breathing

  • 2 x 12 metres backstroke with rotation

  • 12 metres breaststroke kick

  • butterfly kick

  • a water safety skill: do 3 types of scull.

Dolphins

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can swim 2 x 12 metres freestyle with bilateral breathing; swim 2 x 12 metres backstroke with rotation; 12 metres breaststroke kick; and demonstrate butterfly kick. 

In this class your child will learn:

  • 3 x 12 metres freestyle with bilateral breathing

  • 3 x 12 metres backstroke with rotation

  • 2 x 12 metres breaststroke kick on their front and back

  • breaststroke arms with breaststroke kick

  • butterfly kick

  • a water safety skill: move through the water non-stop with clothes on for at least 20 metres.

Marlins

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can swim 3 x 12 metres freestyle with bilateral breathing; 3 x 12 metres backstroke with rotation; 2 x 12 metres breaststroke kick on their front and back; and breaststroke arms with breaststroke kick.

In this class your child will learn:

  • 4 x 12 metres smooth continuous freestyle

  • 4 x 12 metres smooth continuous backstroke

  • 12 metres breaststroke using breath, kick, glide

  • 6 metres butterfly arms and body undulation with no breathing

  • a water safety skill: move through the water non stop for at least 50 metres.

Bronze Sharks

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can swim 4 x 12 metres freestyle; 4 x 12 metres backstroke; 12 metres breaststroke; and 6 metres basic butterfly with no breathing.  

In this class your child will learn:

  • 2 x 50 metres freestyle

  • 2 x 50 metres backstroke

  • 25 metres breaststroke  

  • 15 metres butterfly

  • to dive safely

  • a water safety skill: tread water for 2 minutes with sculling.

Silver Sharks

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can swim 2 x 50 metres freestyle; 2 x 50 metres backstroke; 25 metres breaststroke; and 15 metres butterfly.

In this class your child will learn:

  • 200 metres freestyle

  • 200 metres backstroke

  • 100 metres breaststroke

  • 25 metres butterfly

  • tumble and touch turns

  • water safety skills: perform safety and survival sequences.

Gold Sharks 

An assessment is required to enter this class. We will check that your child can swim 200 metres freestyle; 200 metres backstroke; 100 metres breaststroke; and 25 metres butterfly. All with the appropriate tumble / touch turns.

In this class your child will learn:

  • 300 metres freestyle

  • 300 metres backstroke

  • 200 metres breaststroke

  • 50 metres butterfly

  • 100 metres individual medley
